According to the report of Chinese scientists, they were the first in the world to make successful cloning of monkeys using the same technology, thanks to which the lamb Dolly appeared in 1996. These are two females: Zhong Zhong, born 8 weeks ago, and Hua Hua, younger than her on two weeks. Both monkeys are healthy, the analyzes showed their complete genetic identity to the donor monkey.
The technology used to clone the Dolly sheep and two monkeys is as follows: take an unfertilized egg, remove its own nucleus from it, and instead of it make a nucleus from any cell that does not participate in sexual reproduction. It can be, for example, a skin cell. By now, 23 species of animals have been cloned in this way, but there are no monkeys among them yet. In general, the cloning of primates turned out to be a serious task and ended in failure, mainly because of the non-viability of embryos.
It was the Chinese biologists who managed to improve the technology so much that they received two full-grown cubs of the Javanese Macaque (Macaca fascicularis). A total of 127 unfertilized eggs were taken for the experiment, 109 of them were able to receive 109 embryos, of which 79 were implanted in surrogate mothers, but only six cases became pregnant, and only two cubs appeared.
Chinese biologists emphasize that while there can be no talk about human cloning. The main scientists, as a rule, oppose the creation of human children by cloning for ethical reasons. Instead, the goal is to create a set of genetically identical monkeys for use in medical research, where they will be particularly valuable, because they are more like humans, than the other laboratory animals.
