Bruisable gadgets heal themselves in the sun

GADGETS of the future could bruise when dropped or scratched to highlight damaged areas. Don’t worry though, as a few minutes in the sun will be enough to fade the bruise and repair the damage. Marek Urban and colleagues at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg were inspired to create their self-healing plastic by signs of healing in nature such as newly formed tree bark.
Earlier self-healing materialsMovie Camera do not change colour and require focused laser light for repairs. This new material turns red when damaged and repairs itself when exposed to visible light or changes in temperature or pH. It can also fix itself multiple times, unlike previous materials.

Like all plastics the new material contains long chains of polymers, except that the chains are linked by small molecular bridges that break and change the plastic’s shape when it is scratched. This shape-change produces the bruise, which disappears when energy from the light enables the bridges to reform and the plastic to heal. Urban, who presented the research at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Diego, California, last week, says the new material is not expensive. "It could be used anywhere really, the sky is the limit."

Forget Apple TV, meet the Apple holodeck!

Apple looks to be introducing a new iPad and perhaps something new to do with Apple TV at a press event on March 7. So far, the consensus seems to be that we should expect a faster iPad with a high-resolution “retina display,” Siri integration, and perhaps some kind of haptic feedback. That’s what we’re likely to see, but half the fun of Apple rumors is imagining what the “one more thing” will be–that new feature or device that changes how we do things on a daily basis, like iTunes, Siri, or the iPad itself. With that in mind, I’m going to take a moment to do something I normally try to avoid and turn the rumor mill way up. Today, the Apple rumor goes to 11. Just in case I’m not making myself clear, most of these features probably won’t be unveiled by Apple CEO Tim Cook in front of a live audience next month, but they are features Apple has applied or received patents for, so theoretically they could be in the works. And it would be pretty cool if they actually did become a commercial reality. Apple applied for a patent that covers a DJ-styled audio cross-fade feature recently–could this be part of a native DJ turntable feature in the iPad3? If advanced haptic feedback is part of the new slate, I can imagine legions of new self-styled DJs rockin’ the party who think that “wheels of steel” is strictly an automotive reference. Can we have a brief moment of silence for vinyl, please?

3D eye-tracking and those crazy heads-up goggles. What if the reason we’ve been hearing so much about Google’s purported goggles with an augmented-reality heads-up display is that Apple is actually about to beat the search giant to the punch on it? After all, Apple’s got a patent for such a device, and it’s also been working on some pretty far-out 3D eye-tracking interfaces and other patents that hint at a full-blown 3D GUI. But what might Apple call such a system? I’m guessing “iEyes,” naturally. The business iPad. Some fairly recent patent applications from Apple have hinted that Cupertino wouldn’t mind moving its slate a little deeper into the enterprise. There’s evidence that Apple is looking into how it can be used with CAD and other design environments, and it’s also worked on vicinity sensors that could have multiple uses within the office. There are still plenty of problems with the notion of an enterprise iPad, but why wouldn’t a big Apple be interested in gobbling up a little BlackBerry business, if you know what I mean… Finally, the notion of a vanilla Apple TV already seems played out before it’s happened. Why wouldn’t the world’s most successful company go for broke and give us that Star Trek technology a few centuries early? Apple has already been granted patents for a 3D-imaging system that generates an invisible space where users can manipulate holographically projected images. There’s no reason they couldn’t expand this concept to an entire room, right? Come to think of it, if you loaded a virtual nightclub program onto such a system, there’d be no need to use an iPad for the first idea in this story. In fact, as far as we know, we’re all nothing more than avatars in Apple’s massive holodeck experiment…anyone got Keanu Reeves’ number?

Concept "Urban Future".

The "Urban Future" concept seems to have found some small footholds in our world already. A concept that is being actively pursued for implementation is that of a solar roadway. The concept is highly futuristic that will need at least 20-25 years to execute, even by optimistic estimates. The idea of blurring the lines amongst roads, city squares and sidewalks.
As a working prototype, the "Urban Future" features an installation that is almost 185 square meter (or 1,991 square feet) section of a road. The entire area has been covered with a digitally programmable LED. This makes use of 3D cameras to sense not only the motion of the vehicles but also of the pedestrians and peddlers. This small illustration, strives to impress on how elegant and easy the future of traffic control would be and how the roads would become safe.

One look at the prototype and you get a clear cut picture of how the city of the future will be productively networked to provide safety and a rich outdoor experience. It will show traffic flowing continuously, without the need for traffic lights. The ‘road’ would become a space with multi-functional abilities that would be determined entirely based on the needs. And for those who bother about negligent driving, remember that the cars and vehicles that come along this concept are intelligent too. They will ensure that there is no collision. The best possible paths and patterns for the least crowding and maximum movement will be chosen by a highly intelligent system that is guided with hundreds of 3D cameras. In such a controlled environment, it will be the machines that take over almost all processes, except thinking and idea-generation.

Green wheels on a simulator, which converts the kinetic energy produced by the human body into electricity. Several machines are connected to a central storage unit of energy, where electricity can be supplemented with road lighting and traffic lights. Designer Nadim Inaty imagines that the device can be placed in public places, and allow users to donate a portion of its running time in exchange for a place to start. Flying Yacht: Innovative Future

The brainchild of French designer Yelken Octuri who also designs cabins for Airbus, this ‘Flying Yacht’ concept combines his knowledge of aircraft design with love for seas to create this outlandish concept yacht. We have seen many seaplane concepts so far, but this one surpasses them all as greatest does the least. Flying Yacht idea doesn’t seem as weird or far-fetched, as many engineers and designers have already approached him to turn it into reality.

When on the water, each of the four mobile masts reaches a height of 40-meters and can be individually oriented through a double-jack system, which ensure optimal positioning regardless of wind direction. Sails are stored in compartments located inside the each mast that are further lowered down to work as horizontal wings. This amazing 46-feet long trimaran sailing yacht converts from super yacht to glamorous jet plane with the help of four mobile masts.

The ingenious creation, powered by a 1500cc engine which helps the 17 feet vessel, reaches the speed of 50 mph on the surface of water as well as launches 18 feet into the air from smooth underwater sailing position. Two foot pedals in the cockpit allow drivers to manipulate the fins and control the jet stream created by the 260 hp gas engine that gets its oxygen via an air intake at the dorsal fin when it’s underwater.

The seat, pneumatically sealed watertight cockpit, is flanked by six fins with a single jet controlling propulsion and steering. The Seabreacher X is the ultimate watercraft that can not only work as a submarine and a speedboat but also as a seaplane, albeit it stays in flight for a few seconds only. You’ve got a valid reason to do so for designer Sophia Yung has come up with the inventive futuristic computer design named Lotus. It’s named so because it’s shaped like lotus.

Imitating the lotus plant, the cool new computer system is endowed with amazing technology. Integration with one of the five human senses viz. olfaction is what I find the coolest trait of Lotus besides its design. Also, there’s a smell spray, artificial intelligence, and video and keypad projector that will help develop progressive visual and interactive relationship between the user and the computer. Besides all this, Lotus will add to your home decor with its looks and smart design. Do I need to spend more words? I’m actually spell bound!

Last year’s CES found us at the booth of the iTable, which was an overlay for LCDs and TVs of any size that turned them into a multi-touch surface. We thought it was awesome, and the possibilities were many and various. Now we find that someone has one-upped the iTable, creating a multi-touch surface that’s thinner than a sheet of paper and can just be rolled onto any surface. How cool is that?!

DISPLAX, made by a Portuguese company, is prepared for an age where every tabletop, wall, or any large flat (or even curved) surface could be a touchscreen. DISPLAX is a thinner-than-paper polymer film that can be applied to glass, plastic, or wood and can detect up to 16 touches at once.
