Future in 2020

May 9th, 2010

Our Second Brain or “ThingBook”
In the future nearly every visible thing will be cataloged and indexed, ready to be instantly identified and described to us. Want to go shopping? In the future we won’t need big retail stores with aisles of objects on display. We’ll be able to shop out in the world (see image, above). Do you like that new car you saw drive by? Or those cool shoes on the woman sitting across the room? All you’ll have to do is look at it and your mobile handset or AR-equipped eyeglasses will identify the object and look up the best price and retailer.

Polaroid camera redesign

May 4th, 2010

Designer Evan Jardee takes on a redesign project for one of the most well-known models of modern industrial design in the world. In the whole world! The polaroid camera. If you think about it, you can almost certainly pop up an image or two in your head about what the camera itself looks like. Everyone knows what it does. How about taking that instant-print concept though, and adding more functionality, then also changing the form almost entirely? Sounds like fun!

Interactive Lamp by Seungyoub Oh of Studio Dotdotdot

April 26th, 2010

My mind is BLOWN. I’m not a wine drinker but I have lots of friends who swear by it. Let’s call them winards. The Light Sommelier interactive light is so urber cool, even my winard friends would enjoy it. The action of turning and dimming lights is transposed into wine drinking gestures. As the bottle tips into the glass, the glass lights up. As you tip the glass over, the light dims. You can even vary the intensity by how much wine you “pour”. All done with simple proximity detectors and gyros. Loves it. Happy Monday.

Led Galaxy

April 26th, 2010

With the massive environmental pollution, the reduced figure of stars in the sky has been observed. The Led Galaxy is a streetlamp that is designed to address this issue by bringing the stars on the ground through powerful LEDs, making an artificial galaxy that can make people comfortable and remind about the nature again. The idea features a brighter reverberator than the conventional one, making more recognizable stars as a galaxy under the streetlight. The lack of bright illumination is addressed by passing the light through the transparent bio-basin coating. The base is made of sturdy carbon fiber and provides ventilation for the concept to perform better.

Kitchen life in the future

April 25th, 2010

This is bound to either blow your mind, give you the utter creeps, or do both. All are possible. This project is called the “Living Kitchen,” and you’re about to see some moving parts. Its got faucets shooting out at your head, trays and containers popping up under your family cat, the dog is running around the kitchen flipping out over the convenience of the whole thing. Madness! And how does it all work? Claytronics, of course!

Designer Michaël Harboun envisions kitchen life in the future. Tomorrow’s cooking world in the home. With walls of pure Claytronics technology, this kitchen relies on that, also known as a technology currently being researched by intelligent fellows at Carnegie Mellon University. But do the professors plan on the walls taking on a life of their own?!

The Page E-Reader

April 20th, 2010

One of the major benefits of having gadgets is that it constantly connects us to the world and what’s happening in it. Though these technological devices have allowed us to interact with data from anywhere we choose, there isn’t a unique delivery system for the information they’re delivering especially when “news” is concerned. The printed versions of newspapers can offer mobility, much like a device, but access to content can be cumbersome in certain reading situations. How do we combine the affordances of print and online versions of news and translate that hybrid into a single device? A medium that conforms to human practices and the varied scenarios of accessing news.

Cheers To Finger Power!

January 13th, 2010

Mind you, this is not a “Green” concept and neither does it claim to be “Eco Friendly”. It’s just a helpful solution for a tricky situation. The situation being: you running out of juice on your mobile phone. So what do you do? Remove the battery from the back of the phone; give it a few good turns around your index finger and its gathered enough power to last you a conversation or a safe trip to your charger and electric point.
