Next Unit of Computing, or NUC, is Intel’s new brainchild. The dimensions of the device are very modest, but as the manufacturer claims, this mini-PC is optimal in order to work together with virtual reality technologies and is quite productive in working with the latest computer games. Also the gadget supports a one-time operation with six monitors with 4K-resolution.
Two modifications of the device will be released: Intel NUC8i HNK and HVK, based on 4-core processors of the eighth generation Intel Core,called Kaby-Lake with integrated graphics. The older model is equipped with a 100-watt Core i7-8809G chip from the Kaby Lake-G family:
• base frequency – 3.1 gigahertz;
• in turbo mode, you can accelerate to 4.2 gigahertz;
• availability of the unlocked multiplier – for “overclocking”
• graphic accelerator Radeon RX Vega M GH.
The younger model instead has a 65-watt Core i7-8705G with Radeon RX Vega M GL graphics. This chip is slightly less productive, officially it does not have the overclocking option. Other parameters of the HNK and HVK models are similar. The standard bundle implies the presence of 4 GB of RAM, expand it can be up to 32 GB. To this end, the manufacturer provided the device with a pair of DDR4-2400 connectors. They support the memory function in 2-channel mode. The engineers of the corporation not only built in the NUC modules Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2, but also provided it with a pair of network adapters. The data can be transmitted by them at a speed of up to 1 Gb / s. The internal storage of the device can be expanded by installing no more than two solid-state SSDs. The SATA3 interface in them is represented by cards in the advanced form factor M.2.
With respect to desktops, devices consume a little power – 230 watts. Inside everything is arranged very competently. There is also a cooler, which consists of a copper radiator and a pair of fans. Due to this, the operating temperature of the device should be low, at least until it is dispersed.
The dimensions of the body with a volume of only 1.2 liters are 221 x 142 x 39 mm. On the back and front panels there are: 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports operating at speeds up to 40 Gb / s, USB-A, USB-C (model 3.1 Gen 2), operating at speeds up to 10 Gb / s, one normal HDMI 2.0 a, a pair of video outputs of the DisplayPort format. The gadget was also equipped with an SDXC card reader and a digital audio output of the S / PDIF format. A standard analog output of 3.5 millimeters is also present. A group of RGB LEDs illuminates the top cover of the device with the skull on it when connected to the network. Illumination not only decorates the computer, but also indicates if it works.
The manufacturer declared the good characteristics of the Intel NUC gadgets, allowing the use of solutions based on them in many areas. For example, these computers will help to organize jobs in a small space. They perfectly cope with the most part of the widespread office applications, and also with a considerable number of specialized solutions. Since multimedia and wireless technologies are supported, such a computer can become a powerful media center for the home. It will provide 4K-content even a large family.
