The space agency will return to supersonic civil aviation projects. NASA believes, that has reached an important milestone in the creation of a quiet supersonic passenger airplane. Last week, the Preliminary Design Review for the aircraft, known by the code name Quiet Supersonic Transport or QueSST, was completed. QueSST is the first stage in the development of the experimental aircraft Low Boom Flight Demonstration (LBFD), which is part of the experimental development program X-plane.
The process will use the experience of the successes and failures of the Concorde aircraft, as well as the latest model of QueSST. Recall, in the QueSST program, specialists have managed to solve the problem of sound impact – he prevents the vessel from passing through the sound barrier and developing sufficient speed. The US government allocated $ 20 million for this work in 2016 and the equipment has already undergone flight tests in a wind tunnel.
The new plans of the team Lockheed Martin and NASA – the improvement of the aircraft, its adaptation to passenger traffic. As a result, the technique should safely fly over populated areas and not cause discomfort to their inhabitants. Since a number of complex technical issues have already been solved, most likely, a new era of supersonic civil aviation, despite the need for significant investment, is waiting for us in the very near future.
Of course, before the creation of a real aircraft is still very far, but innovative projects like this – this is a systematic movement from one key stage to another. And the approval of the preliminary design means that NASA has taken another important step along the way. Although, according to NASA calculations, it takes four years to implement the technical side of the project.
