The ESA (European Space Agency) has developed a curious plan, more like a science fiction. Here it is believed that in the next few years the ISS can be sent on a well-deserved rest. A new international project in the space sphere will be the lunar settlement. From the ice on the Moon, water will be extracted, tools and houses will be printed on 3D printers, and plants – grown in local soil.
Bernard Foing, representative of the European Space Agency, said at the European Congress of planetologists in Riga that the first colonists may be on the Moon for a decade and a half. It will be up to ten specialists, and in a quarter of a century the number of settlers will exceed a hundred.
By the 50th year of this century already will one thousand lunar inhabitants. Then, perhaps, the first families will appear on the satellite, with the children born on the Moon. At the moment delivery on the “Moon Village” relatives would cost at least hundreds of millions of euros per person. But in a couple of decades, this figure will significantly decrease. On the Moon there is an opportunity to extract basalt and use the extracted materials for three-dimensional printing of space vehicles. Run them from the lunar surface forty times cheaper, than with the terrestrial.
Water can be obtained at the poles of the satellite from the ice. If it is split into oxygen with hydrogen, it is possible to produce raw materials for rocket fuel. The scientists noted the presence of the helium-3 isotope. It can become the basis for safe, clean nuclear energy.
According to Christiane Heinicke, a physicist, the lunar life will be difficult. She understands what is at stake: along with other scientists, she spent a year in the eleven-meter dome, trying to simulate Martian life. When find yourself in a residential module or in a spacesuit outside, a person does not fully experience the situation of the planet. From colleagues, he can not go anywhere. And the green grass behind the window will be replaced by rough stones, and unlike the usual sky.
Scientists complain that at this stage politicians do not show serious interest in idea of ??”Moon Village”. Although the project was warmly supported by commercial firms and representatives of the scientific world. And SpaceX next year will launch tourist trips to the Moon. May be…
