According to the author of the product, when creating the device, it was inspired by the original meaning of the word “prosthesis”. Its original meaning is “to expand the possibilities of the existing”, and not “replace the lost”.
This extends the functionality of the human hand. The design elements of the innovative gadget are printed on a 3D printer in order to simulate the natural movement of the finger as much as possible.
The device is fixed on the palm of your hand, while the “Third Thumb” is next to the little finger, on the opposite side of the natural thumb. Due to this decision, the author decided to simplify the user’s capture of objects.
The user controls the artificial finger using two pressure sensors, which are built into the sole of the shoe:pressed the sensor – squeezed the finger; repeated it is again – unclenched him.
With the help of The Third Thumb, you can take complicated guitar chords, grab more things while cleaning, carry more dishes and so on.
The signal from the sensor in the sole to the prosthesis on the wrist comes through Bluetooth. It sounds scary, but people get used to it, says the author. It’s not harder than, say, driving a car – alternately you press the brake and gas pedals.
For now, this is only a prototype, but the goal is global – to rethink, how we see sphere of application of prosthesis. Amazing foresight or a mistaken vision of the future? We’ll find out soon.
