Flexible displays and other components as well as modular design promise to revolutionize smartphone and smartwatch design. Concept devices and patents hint at an exciting future but the technology has yet to catch up to the potential.
As the name implies, the Flex modular flexible display smartwatch consists of a number of flexible modules. The main components are a camera with 10x optical zoom, a primary module with main display and processor and a smaller secondary display which can operate both in conjunction with the main one or independently. All three are flexible, made of materials such as polyurethane-coated Lycra. Flexible battery components, coated with an elastic packaging insulator, are used to connect the different modules.
This gadget has 75% of its body made of a flexible material and it’s able to wrap around the wrist. The rest of 25% is the camera with that kickass zoom. When the camera and display are unplugged, they can be used on their own, apparently, with the larger screen being used to play media, while the smaller one for notifications and such. The Flex’s modular design allows you to remove components when not needed. For example, the main display module could be removed to transform the Flex into a compact digital camera.
While the current design appears to be a bit unwieldy, component miniaturization could eventually lead to a slimmer device. Other components would presumably be offered alongside to further all you to customize your Flex modular flexible display smartwatch. For example, a module with a heart rate monitor and other health sensors could be added when fitness and health tracking is needed.
