Almost simultaneously, three large technology companies: Intel, ASUS and Lenovo have presented conceptual computers that demonstrate what laptops can become in the future.
Intel showed a two-screen alternative to laptops
Intel worked on a computer with two screens for two years and showed a prototype of such a device. It was given the code name Tiger Rapids.
Special EPD (electronic paper displays) screens are used here, on which it is convenient to write by hand, the structure of its surface should feel like a letter on paper, rather than slide, as it does on modern touch screens.
The prototype from Intel was created following the example of an ordinary paper notebook. The diagonal of each of its displays – 7.9 inches, it installed the processors of the seventh generation Core, and it is supposed to be able to hold out on one battery charge of 13-15 hours.
The main feature of the new type of computers will be a variety of use cases. The device can be used as a single or double tablet, use a second screen to display the keyboard, shortcuts or other information. You can also connect a mouse and keyboard to the Tiger Rapids and use it as a monoblock.
Intel is not going to release computers on its own, this will be the partners of the company, but the exact timeframes for entering the market are not yet known.
Lenovo and ASUS also work in this direction
ASUS showed the conceptual computer Project Precog, which can do all of the above (except handwriting convenience), but the company plans to release real models based on this concept as early as next year.
Less information about the new “2 in 1” Yoga Book. Lenovo has so far only said that his second generation will receive two screens.
But Lenovo already has experience selling the most similar to the conceptual computer models. The Yoga Book of the first generation surprised to touchpad, that worked like a keyboard and a touchpad. But it was here that the main drawback of the sensor design was discovered: the lack of feedback during printing. Perhaps it is for this reason that the company declared the functions of artificial intelligence for the keyboard.
These premieres show the desire of large technology companies (not only Intel, ASUS and Lenovo) to rethink portable computers. And to offer such devices that would suit the user in any of his life situations. Need create a universal computer.
Over the past decade, it was possible to observe how the tablets and “2 in 1” win the market from traditional laptops.
In the near future, the trend towards a decrease in the share of traditional computers and laptops will take a more clear outline. And soon such products will remain only in the budget segment.
